Susanne Staples

Profile
Susanne Staples

Susanne is a soprano from Dresden, Germany, who studied 5 years as a Music (and German and Russian) secondary school teacher at the famous "Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber" in Dresden. Her main subject was singing, which she professionally started at 14; her second subject was violin, which she started playing at the age of 6.

In Dresden, Susanne was strongly involved in church music, playing and singing as a soloist in Sunday services or having solo concerts with several organists. She has performed in Händel´s Messiah, Haydn´s Creation, Bach Arias, Händel Arias and Mozart´s Exsultate Jubilate.

Susanne sang in various chamber choirs, including the Dresden motet choir (Dresdner Motettenchor), with whom she entered the choir competition in Italy, Riva del Garda, in 2002; and with the double quartet Variatio as the first soprano, with whom she travelled with in 2004, 2005 and 2006, singing Byrd masses, Bach and Schütz motets, Tallis, Schönberg, Durufle, Bruckner, Stravinsky and Grieg songs in churches of North Germany.

Since November 2008 Susanne resides in Christchurch with her Kiwi husband and their little son. In NZ her degree only counts as a Bachelor of Arts in Music and German, so hopefully next year she can start a 1 year post-graduate study to become a fully recognised teacher.
