High Notes

The Press, Christchurch, Wednesday, 24 December 2008

Established in early 2007, Christchurch-based Southern Opera (SO) continues to fulfil its mandate, says its executive chairman Christopher Doig.

"SO's goal is to provide quality entertainment and work for local artists and arts practitioners in Christchurch, including engaging players from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra," Doig says.

"During the past two years it has employed more than 500 artists and production personnel.  "This number includes some extraordinary international talent - contracted only when New Zealand performers cannot be found for a specific role."

Southern Opera's 2009 season features Puccini's one-act comic opera Gianni Schicchi in March.  After four performances at Christchurch's James Hay Theatre, the production will move to Ashburton and Oamaru.

Gianni Schicchi will be directed by Mark Hadlow and conducted by Peter Walls.  The cast includes New Zealand baritone Martin Snell and an ensemble cast of 14 mostly New Zealand singers.  The production includes Blooming Opera, a showcase of floral songs compered by Hadlow.

In September and October The Magic Flute works its own Mozartian magic, wih a cast including Grant Dickson, Jared Holt, Rebecca Ryan and James Rodgers.  The production will be conducted by Tom Woods and directed by Linda Kitchen.  "We've assembled strong casts of New Zealand performers, directors and designers for operas which will appeal to all tastes and ages," he says.
