Seung-Wook Seong
Korean baritone Seung-Wook Seong began his musical training at Yon-Sei University in Seoul, graduating with a first-class degree. In December 2001 he won an entrance scholarship to the Royal Academy Opera Programme followed by studies at the National Opera Studio in London. Whilst a student, his awards included the Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks Award, Ludmila Andrew Russian Song Prize, the Blyth-Buesst Operatic Singing Prize, the Opera Rara Bel Canto Competition and the Queen’s Commendation for Excellence from the Royal Academy of Music. In 2007 he won The Stuart Burrows International Voice Award and continued his studies at the Cardiff International Academy of Voice.
Seung-Wook’s operatic experiences include Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte, Leporello in Don Giovanni and Betto in Gianni Schicchi in Korea and Yamadori in Madame Butterfly for Opera Holland Park. His roles for the Royal Academy Opera included Haraschta in The Cunning Little Vixen conducted by Charles Mackerras, Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte conducted by Sir Colin Davis, Don Carlo in Verdi’s Ernani, Pandolfe in Massenet’s Cendrillon and Littore in L’Incoronazione di Poppea.
Concert highlights include a gala concert in New Zealand with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Frederica von Stade, gala concert at the Hampton Court Palace Festival with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, concerts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a recital tour of Ireland promoted by Irish Music Network.
